The Cachers

Full Name: JB Barrett

Geocaching Screen Name: LionsLair

Birth State:
Georgia is where I was born, but I claim Florida as home.
I’ve been here 25+ years, which is longer than anywhere else

Marital Status: Married to my best friend! :o)

How did you get into geocaching?
I was playing online backgammon with Sequia_2 back in ’06, she had something about caching on her profile so I asked her about it. I didn’t find my first cache until 6 months later and the rest as they say is history. Since then my wife and I have become good friends with Sequia_2 and her husband CajunCacheMan

What's the meaning behind the screen name?
I’ve been collecting lions and had a fascination with them since I can remember. When I first started playing on the internet I came up with the user name after Disney commercialized my original username “LionKing”

Do you cache alone or are you part of a team?
Depends how you see things… We have one account for both my wife and I… while she has never cached alone, I have many times. We enjoy caching together, she is more of an urban cacher and I am more of a long hike in the woods cacher. It all balances out in the end.

How many caches have you found and how many have you hidden?
I’m not a numbers hound and could be well around 2000 if I were. I prefer the memories made during our caching adventures. To answer the question… 900+ finds and 100+ hides

Have you cached in other states or countries?
Yes several times out of state. I haven’t been out of the country since I was a kid though

And if so, how do those caches compare with caches you have found here?
Pretty well the same everywhere. I didn’t enjoy caching in the snow though! :o)

Besides geocaching, what do you enjoy doing in your spare time?
You mean there is life outside of caching? Let’s see… canoeing, hiking, geocoin collecting… that type of thing…

What kind of wildlife have you encountered while geocaching?
Frogs, snakes , birds, deer, wild pigs , … yet to run across a gator or bear though… The most memorable was a fox though, within just a few feet seemed as if it were following me to a cache one night.

What advice would you offer new geocachers/hiders?
Don’t get frustrated when you can’t find a difficult cache. Stay clear of the 5/5 type hides until you are ready for them. And find at least 100 or so before you hide any.

What do you say when muggles ask what you are doing?
Depends on the situation. I think the best was “looking for rare mushrooms” while in a state park or “Do you know the way to the airport”… while in the middle of the woods, miles from any airport…

What is your favorite cache container?
Anything the owner puts thought into… I’ve personally been told some of mine are favorites only because of the camo on a nano. I rarely do micros anymore while outside of my home coord range due to the fact I know what McD’s and Walmart have to offer in every town across America. I will make an exception if local cachers brag about something special though.

What is the strangest thing you have ever found in the cache?
Many things including some unmentionables, but I’ll stick with marijuana for now…

What was your most memorable caching find/experience?
Wow, I could go and write a book on this one, but I’d have to say the time we spent riding through the woods in Osceola during FFF4 in “08. My wife and I had such a good time caching together then, I’d find ‘em, she’d log ‘em

Urban hides, love em or hate em?
Personally I don’t like them as much as the wife, but they have their time and place

Are you planning on attending Cacheapalooza 4 in December?
You bet your sweet tooth! We had such a wonderful time last year meeting everyone and caching in JDSP. This year we’re bringing the bikes and canoe!

And what would you like to see more of at the event?
The Geo-olympics were awesome, I’d like to see more events added….

And finally, Garmin or Magellan? Both! :o) 3 Garmins and 1 Magellan
