Name: Tom Witt
Geocaching Screen Name: Gator Man
Age: 58
Birth State: Kentucky
Martial Status: Married
How did you get into geocaching?
I was walking in a park in Connecticut one winter day, when I saw
some people searching for something. I offered to help them, and
they explained Geocaching to me. Since it was winter, with snow
& ice everywhere, I didn't sign up until 3 months later.
What's the meaning behind the screen name?
A large alligator once tried to run me down so it could have me
for lunch, but I was a little faster. Also, that was my "Handle"
back in CB Radio days.
Have you cached in other states or countries?
Yes, in Georgia, Tennessee, Connecticut, Massachusetts, Rhode Island
and Pennsylvania.
And if so, how do those caches compare with caches you have found
here?
The caches are pretty much the same, but the scenery can be prettier
where there are elevation changes on the trails.
How many caches have you found and how many have you hidden?
Approaching 3500 found, over 200 hidden.
Besides geocaching, what do you enjoy doing in your spare time?
I'm a volunteer Land Steward at Juno Dunes Natural Area. I participate
in other volunteer projects the county hosts such as planting seedlings,
trash removal and invasive/exotic plant removal.
What advice would you offer new geocachers/hiders?
There are difficulty numbers on caches for a reason. Don't complain
about a DNF on a 3 or 4 difficulties rated cache if you have only
found 40 or 50 caches! Get some more experience finding caches before
you start hiding them too. Oh, and NO GLADWARE!
Do you cache alone or are you part of a team?
I log my finds as an individual, but caching with others is usually
more fun!
What kind of wildlife have you encountered while geocaching?
? Gators, Florida Panthers (Twice), Wild Turkeys, Raccoons,
Armadillos, Snakes, Squirrels, Deer, Homeless People, People who
thought they were alone in the woods (At least three times).….
What do you say when muggles ask what you are doing?
? Depends on how I feel. Sometimes I explain Geocaching to them.
Sometimes I say I'm looking for poison lizards or snakes or frogs.
Sometimes I make up a story like "I'm a Bridge Inspector" or "I'm
conducting a habitat survey".
What is your favorite cache container?
ammo box
What is the strangest thing you have ever found in the cache?
A note to Geo.rge Cache, written by a muggle named Ralph. See the
logbook note image at Pig Out, GC16TBE. It's a HOOT!
What was your most memorable caching find/experience?
It is a toss-up between "Ghost Orchid" and "el Rio del Camaleon"
Urban hides, love em or hate em?
Currently, I'm not real fond of 'em, but I do 'em. I'd rather be
out in the woods.
Are you planning on attending Cacheapalooza 4 in December?
And what would you like to see more of at the event?
Yes, I'm planning to attend. I'd like to see more volunteers helping
out with pre-assigned tasks.
And finally, Garmin or Magellan?
Garmin!
