Full Name: Pete
Geocaching Screen Name: JunglePete
Birth State: Florida
Martial Status: Married to Ecuadorable
How did you get into geocaching?:
Some wacky dude asked to go on a hike I was leading in Vermont (in
January) and spent the 2 hours hiking up the mountain explaining
what geocaching was. When I returned home I plugged my zip in the
GC.com and despite the fact that I was living in the middle of the
Vermont woods, there was a cache on an island ¼ mile from my cabin.
I snowshoed out to find it, but it was under 3 feet of snow. In
May I couldn't wait any longer so I got the canoe out and shoved
it out onto the thinning ice and scooted my way across the ice to
the island and dug the cache out of the last of the snow. It was
a huge ammo can. I was hooked.
What's the meaning behind the screen name?
I was raised around the Everglades and work in the Everglades. Plus
I like Jungles.
Do you cache alone or are you part of a team?
Part of the Unusual Suspects (Team Crimes Scene, Lehigh Mafia)
How many caches have you found and how many have you hidden?
2387 I think, hidden more than 50 in Vermont, Mass, Florida and
Ecuador. Only 2 have been muggled and archived)
Have you cached in other states or countries?
And if so, how do those caches compare with caches you have found
here?
Ecuador caching is wild. There is no terrain like Vermont caches
though. But than again they don't have Alligators
Besides geocaching, what do you enjoy doing in your spare time?
Photography
What kind of wildlife have you encountered while geocaching?
Alligators, stepped on a Cottonmouth in the water, Dolphins, Manatees.
Few things I haven't seen
What advice would you offer new geocachers/hiders?
Latch on to a geo-buddy. Lamp skirt hides are lame, but I'll take
the smiley.
What do you say when muggles ask what you are doing?
I normally act like a lunatic and people stay away, but if I think
they might be interested I explain.
What is your favorite cache container?
Gigantic Ammo Can
What are you infamous for?
Supposedly I dress inappropriately but wear shorts and Tevas nearly
everywhere we cache including 18 mile scrub hunts
What is the strangest thing you have ever found in the cache?
Weed down in the Keys. Someone found a Hershey Bar in my Ghost Trail
cache in Vermont
What was your most memorable caching find/experience?
Sometimes you feel like a Nut - Mound Key cache in Estero Bay was
a fun paddle and to be on a Calusa Indian island that was essential
their temple was just too cool. Our cell phones died on the island.
The Nowhere Caches near Tampa were a lot of fun. 18 miles. 37 caches
and all on foot.
Urban hides, love em or hate em?
Absolutely fine. Some are better than others. But when I'm working
I can grab a few. Urban cammo hides are getting better as some people
step it up a bit.
Are you planning on attending Cacheapalooza 4 in December?
And what would you like to see more of at the event?
The SW Florida crew is going to be well represented. I think we
own most of the tent loop.
And finally, Garmin or Magellan?
Garmin
