The Cachers

Full Name: Lorrie LeBlanc

Geocaching Screen Name: Lorriebird

Martial Status: Single

How did you get into geocaching?
A few years back I read about geocaching in the newspaper. I tried to get my brother interested in the hobby after he went through a difficult divorce. As it turns out, I was was the one who got hooked!

What's the meaning behind the screen name?
Most of my friends, especially those at work know me by my nickname of 'Bird'. I am also a big animal watcher, mostly birds. And I fly for a living!

Have you cached in other states or countries?
And if so, how do those caches compare with caches you have found here?
Yes I have cached in other states and countries. Right now I am on a quest to complete the 50 states. I am up to 49 and only need Hawaii, which I hope to visit this spring.

How many caches have you found and how many have you hidden?
At the moment I am up to between 2100 and 2200 caches found of all types. I just found my first Wherigo! I have hidden 40 to date, also of all different types. I try to create caches for all levels of geocacher from easy finds and handicap accessible to very difficult. I also have a few puzzles out. But my favorites are the kayak caches!

Besides geocaching, what do you enjoy doing in your spare time?
Pretty much anything outdoors. I love hiking, camping and kayaking. And when I can combine all three of those at once, I am in heaven!

What advice would you offer new geocachers/hiders?
Just spend some time finding all kinds of caches BEFORE you start creating your own. There is so much to learn at the beginning while you really get the hang of it. I would advise finding around 100 or so first. And PLEASE do not use the 'Needs Maintenance' tag on a cache just because you couldn't find it! And finally, come to some local events and meet your fellow cachers. We are always happy to welcome newcomers! After all, that's how we all get started, no?

Do you cache alone or are you part of a team?
I love both. I have an odd work schedule so I am mostly alone when I cache. But I love to get together and work as a team even more.

What kind of wildlife have you encountered while geocaching?
Wildlife of all kinds...water, land and air based. Way too many to mention as I try to do as many hiking type caches as possible. But my favorite sighting of all time was when a group of us spotted a gorgeous Florida panther out on Jane's scenic highway!

What do you say when muggles ask what you are doing?

I have a standard speech about an 'internet based treasure hunt'. But if they really seem interested, I am happy to explain to them about geocaching.

What is your favorite cache container?
Nothing beats a good old fashioned ammo can after a long hike in the woods.

What is the strangest thing you have ever found in the cache?
While doing a multi-cache in the British Virgin Islands, I found tickets to ride a nearby tram to take you to the top of a mountain. The final was on the top of that mountain. And in the final were free tickets for drinks in the nearby restaurant overlooking the ocean! Fabulous!

What was your most memorable caching find/experience?
Good experiences are waaaaaay too many to list. One of the strangest bad experiences was when out in some remote woods I found a 55 gallon drum garden full of pot plants. The 'garden' had recently been watered and so I knew the owner wasn't far away. Yikes! I got outta' there fast!

Urban hides, love em or hate em?
Actually I love them as I am often stuck in different cities for work and without urban hides I would not be able to cache. However I am not a big fan of placements that make you search in very visible high muggle areas.

Are you planning on attending Cacheapalooza 4 in December?
And what would you like to see more of at the event?
Yes, I will be at CP4! I can't wait! I was especially fond of the geo olympics.

And finally, Garmin or Magellen?
Definitely Garmin. I have a cool new Garmin Oregon...but they will never be able to pry my fingers off my reliable old Legend Cx's! I have two of them and will keep them until they fall apart.
