The Cachers

Full Name:
Lori Barlettano

Screen Name: Retriever4cache

Birth State: New Jersey

Martial status: Married

How did you get into geocaching?
October 2008 I went to Jacksonville to work for 3 months. A guy next to me, Mike, said we will have to go geocaching. I said what is that???? He explained and it sounded very juvenile and uninteresting to me. A female, (Lisa, who stole my Tony travel bug) stood up next to him all excited stating that geocaching was great fun. After Lisa's rant, I said I would give it a try. After my first find, I had this very strange obsession. Most of my day and night involved talking, looking, or thinking about geocaching. In all fairness to my obsession, I was living in a hotel room in an unfamiliar area for three months with time on my hands. After a short time, I felt as though I qualified for the Intervention show….MY NAME IS LORI……L….O……R…..I AND I AM AN ADDICT….a geocache addict. It was just great fun to me and a fabulous way to see Jacksonville and St. Augustine while out hunting.

What's the meaning behind the screen name?
My co-worker and geocache introducer, Mike, chose my name for me. My other obsession is my love for my English white Golden Retrievers that I had shipped in from Hungary. I would talk to Mike about my puppies and even ordered the third European puppy while I was working in Jacksonville. I plan on breeding my dogs for cash, ergo…..retriever4cache.

Do you cache alone or are you part of a team?
In Jacksonville, I cached a few times with some co-workers. However, they could not keep up with my obsession so I cached alone until recently. Now that I am home, I have wooed my brother, gtstangpurple, into my obsession. I am happy to report the obsession must run through our genes so I now have company while tromping through the jungles where cachers such as Maxwell10 or FootTRAX hide their caches.

How many caches have you found and how many have you hidden?
hidden 23….found 100.

Have you cached in other state or countries?
I am very sad that someone did not introduce geocaching to me sooner. I love traveling and have traveled the world visiting many countries. It would have been sooooooo wonderful to have found caches in all of those countries. I do have a home on Beech Mountain, NC and I am so surprised there are no caches in that great hiking area. I plan of changing that during my next visit there…Beech Mountain will be introduced to geocaching so everyone can enjoy the beauty of the mountains while looking for treasures.

Besides geocaching, what do you enjoy doing in your spare time?
I spend time with my husband enjoying the pool or dining out. We travel and enjoy spending time at Lou's Lodge in NC. We spent a lot of time building this home over the years. In fact, we have one other lodge still for sale if anyone would like a new cozy log cabin next to a Beech Mountain Ski Resort.

What kind of wildlife have you encountered while geocaching?
Since I am a newbie, nothing out of the ordinary. The most exciting wildlife was a tortoise on his back (I helped him to his feet.)

What advice would you offer new geocachers/hiders?
Get with someone to guide you at first. It is a little confusing to work through the geocache site and finding the caches until you get your feet wet.

What do you say when muggles ask what you are doing?
I have not been asked yet.

What is your favorite cache container?
Mine, of course.

What is the strangest thing you have ever found in the cache?
Nothing strange yet.

What was your most memorable caching find/experience?
My most memorable cache was a magnetic cache located 20 feet up a light pole at Wal-Mart. I said what in the heyyyyyy to myself. You would need a ladder to get up there to get it. Oh yeah, I just happened to have a fold up ladder in my trunk so up the ladder I went at the Wal-Mart parking lot. I did get a few stares, but that did not stop me. Crazy!! :)

Urban hides, love em or hate em?
Love them..because I don't have to bush whack and get dirty.

Are you planning on attending Cacheapalooza 4 in December?
I had not been planning on it.

And finally, Garmin or Magellan?
Neither, I use Geocache Navigator on my Blackberry
